I’m not sure if Madi realizes the talent she has in modeling. Embodying this character, we had developed it fully and it was a collaboration I was proud of because we each had our hands in it. I could see a transition from her as a person to embodying a vocalization of her movements. Listening is so important, and that is a trait she has, she listened a lot and then took it a dimension further. Alison and I bought this plant together, it was my first succulent, and I thought planting it in a natural environment, just seemed so Maine. In Maine is the feeling of nature, a blanket of quietness, a cerebral understanding. Internal problems of person versus the natural world is prevalent. Snow, storms, power outages, hitting wild life, trees falling on my car, those were all things that set me back in money and time. Living surrounded by the natural world, you get these incidents and that’s sort of what this theme is about, being on top for a second, being knocked down, not hearing things you want to hear, then eventually acceptance and working with the natural world. Nature is not here to serve you, it is really self-serving. We shot 10 exposures of Kodak Portra 400 on the Mamiya RB67, and a few on another back with Fompan 400, a favorite emulsion due to it’s aged characteristics and soft dreamy glow.
